Print defaults not applying from server

I have a number of network printers, mostly Konica-Minolta BizHub and Ricoh MPC, various models.  All are served by a Windows Server 2012R2 print server. All use the latest current x64 drivers from the respective manufacturers.

The clients are Windows 7 x64.

Printing defaults are set on the server as we require them (double-sided B&W, but it could be anything), but they do not get applied to the clients when they connect to the queues.

We do not use GPP to deploy the printers as we found it was causing very very long logon times (several minutes), so the users manually connect the queue once and thereafter it's stored in their User Profile in the usual way.

Deleting the "device" and reconnecting it from the client makes no difference.

I'm familiar with the DevMode registry value, and have created a script which deletes it from every queue key at every logon; this makes no difference either: the printers stubbornly continue to default to single-sided colour.

Can anyone suggest a solution?

Thanks in advance.
