Print drivers on windows 7 clients missing dependent files..?

$

Hello All,

I am having a strange issue with a handful of our windows 7 clients.

What we have:

Recently I have setup a new 2008 R2 x64 server to hosts the printers in our school district. I have tried to keep things simple by using global print drivers that are available.  I only have the lastest hp global driver, the lastest xerox global driver, a dell printer driver, and a minolta driver. All of out client machines are running windows 7 enterprise and are both x64 and x86.

The Problem:

A handful of windows 7 machines seem to be missing the dependent files that should be listed under the properties of the driver in "print server properties". It has happened on x64 and x86 clients and pretty much prevents the clients from using any functionality of the printer they are connected to. At first I thought it may have been a xerox driver issue, but after seeing the issue on a few hp printers I am thinking its a problem with point and print somewhere? Any information that may help us resolve this problem would be greatly appreciated, thanks for your support! :D

How to replace inheritable server permissions on printers

Windows Server 2008 R2 print server. Want to add an AD group to the Print Server Security properties tab and have the new group get inherited to all existing previously defined printers.  I already have many hundreds of printers defined. Can't seem to find a way to force inheritance of this new group to all printers. Seems like I need a scripted answer to update each and every printer's security or find a non-documented method to force inheritance. The problem is illustrated in the attached screenshots. Notice that the options are available in NTFS file security, but not on a print server for printer security settings! Massive "oops!" on the part of the designers of the print spooler.

Here is a screenshot from print server. Notice there is no "Include inheritable permissions from this object's parent". There is no "Replace all child object permissions with permissions with inheritable permissions from this object".  :(

Here is the NTFS analogue to what I want to do.

2008 R2 printing from Outlook randomly gives "there was an error when printing started"

This comes from a terminal server environment. This error only happens from outlook/word 2010. Printer is fine 100% of the time from the biz application and adobe or test page function. I have several users on several servers reporting this. Here is what I have tried.

-Recreated user's roaming profile

-Changed drivers

-Changed default printer

-Deleted outlprnt file

-Changed user to a different TS

-Repaired office.

The only fix when this error happens is for the user to log off and back on. Nothing in the eventvwr that tells me its even happening.

Any advice?

W2K8 Server Shared Printers won't install if drivers not in Win7 C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository?

$

We have Windows 7 64 bit computers in two domains that just recently will not install printers (Windows 2008 R2 print servers) if the driver folder for the printer does not already exist in C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository. This is under a domain administrator account logged onto the workstation.

If the driver folder exists then it will install but if the printer is brand new and doesn't use an existing driver or uses a new driver, the folder will not be populated in the FileRepository. For example if you rename the Lexmark Universal Printer Driver folder lmud0c40.inf_amd64..... to another name and delete try to reinstall the same printer you had working 5 minutes earlier, it will not install.  The C:\Windows\System32\Spool\Drivers\x64\3 folder STILL contains all the drivers for the printer but for some reason it won't

The error is: Connect to Printer: Windows cannot connect to printer: Operation Failed with Error 0x00000057

All the "googled" solutions say to add the folder to the FileRepository manually but that is unrealistic with 19,000+ computers.

This exists across multiple domains, with multiple printer types and is not related to Group Policy as the issue still exists in a computer no policies applied except that had point and print=disabled. It also doesn't appear to be permissions based as I granted the user "full control" of the FileDepository folder and it didn't make a difference.

They are signed drivers. The Print$ is shared on the server.

The odd thing is that in another domain we have, it works just fine even with regular user accounts (with point and print disabled). The server serves up the printer driver to the spool folder and it is copied to the FileRepository

Removing WSD port removal method deletes the print queue

All,

I used the following method to remove unwanted WSD ports from my Windows Server 2008 print server:

  • I could not delete WSD ports found on our print server as the print server thought they were still in use.
  • Did some Googling and found a few posts suggesting this method to get rid of WSD ports:
    • Create a dummy print queue
    • Assign it the WSD port you want to remove
    • Delete the dummy queue
    • Repeat for each WSD port

However, when I did this the legitimate (TCP/IP) print queue was deleted and I had to recreate it.

Does this behavior make sense to anyone?

How to limit network printing to local subnet only?

$

When staff travel from location to location, they routinely capture and print to a network printer on the local subnet.  When they return to their "home" center they still have the printer captures from when they were roaming and inadvertently send print jobs they are unable to retrieve.  All users accounts are located in the same OU and we do not register computers in AD.  Is there a print server or group policy setting to control network printing based on the local subnet?  PCs are Windows XP/7, Servers are Windows 2008 R2.

"List in the directory" not checked by default WS2008R2

How do I get "List in the directory" to be set by default on a 2008R2 print server?  It is set by default on a 2003R2 print server.  I have "Automatically publish new printers in Active Directory" enabled in Group Policy.    Thank you.

Replacing print server - Internet printers no longer work

$

We are attempting to move our network printers from one Server 2008 r2 box to another which will then be renamed to be the same as the old one.

On the old box I exported the printers to a file then imported them to the new one.

After shutting down the old server and renaming the new one we are able to print to the shared printers as before if they were added through the add printers wizard or by browsing \\printerserver . Unfortunately if users had added printers from the old server from http://printserver/printers they no longer work after the migration and need to be removed and re added. Is there any way to do this migration so that printers added via internet explorer will still work without having to be re-installed?

For the time being we have renamed the servers to how they were previously.

thanks

Why does Windows Firewall have to be turned on in order to share printers? This makes no sense at all.

On a server with Windows Server 2008 R2 in Print Management, I added a network printer to be shared with workstations. After installing, the installer said the driver installed successfully, but the printer did not; it had an error code: 0x000006d9. I found a forum with a post suggesting that the firewall needs to be turned on.

I turned on Windows Firewall from services.msc, and I was then able to install the printer and share it. What I don't understand is why the firewall needs to be on just to share a printer. Why can't I keep the firewall offand share a printer?

I understand that running the "Print Server" service creates a firewall exception for file and printer sharing; but if the firewall is off, common sense would suggest that no such exception is necessary. I should be able to share a printer with no problems. I can sharefiles just fine without the firewall enabled, why can't I share printers?

Copy/Migrate printers between Server 2008r2 servers

Hello,

-

I have a situation where I need to get a few hundred printers duplicated on several servers in a very short period of time (Minutes).

-

Using tools such as PrintBRM and PrintUI.DLL works fine, except it takes a minimum of 30 seconds per printer to add.

-

We are keeping all drivers in Sync using pnpUtil, so all servers have the exact drivers and print processors.  We are also keeping the number of drivers to a minumum using UPD's and such.

-

Can anyone tell me why the following process would not work for migrating printers between the servers?

1) Create and configure printer and Port on "Master" server using appropriate driver

2) Export "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors\Standard TCP/IP Port\Ports\PortName"

3) Export "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Printers\PrinterName"

4) Stop Spooler on Destination Server

5) Import the Port and Printer settings

6) Restart the Print Spooler

-

I have tried this - even going between Server 2003 and 2008 and it seems to work just fine.  As soon as the Spooler is started the printer(s) are available - in theory, I could export the entire "Printers" and "Ports" keys to migrate all printers in the amount of time it takes to do a Export/Import.

-

The problem is, I tried this on a very limited number of printers, and can not find anyone doing anything similar since PrintBRM or PrintMigrator came out.  If anyone knows why this process will no longer work, could you please share?

Thanks!

Print Server Backup

We have many print servers nearly 10 (Windows 2003 & Windows 2008). We take backups of the print servers using the Print Management on windows 2008 and printimig on windows 2003. Is there way we can take the backup of all the print sefvers from a single console and schedule the backup monthly ?

Print Server Alias - windows 2012

I am trying to use a CNAME alias to facilitate the replacement of servers.  The servers also happen to be domain controllers, running Windows 2012.

I have tried the following to no avail from another post.  I have rebooted a couple times as well.

1) Add A record or CNAME to DNS

2) Add the following to the registry:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
;Print Spooler Driver Exception
[ HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print]
"ThrowDriverException"=dword:00000001

;Disabled Strict Name Checking for Win2k8R2
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\LanmanServer\Parameters]
"DisableStrictNameChecking"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\Lsa]
"DisableLoopbackCheck"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print]
"DnsOnWire"=dword:00000001

-------------------------------
3) open admin console and enter:
NETDOM COMPUTERNAME [fqdn of server you are on] /add:[fqdn of dns entry (from step 1) to accept]

"NETDOM COMPUTERNAME" should be typed exactly like it is.

Server 2008 print server/windows xp client: printing/install causing print spooler to lockup on clients

Server 2008 R2 print server

Windows XP and Windows 7 clients

Lexmark Universal v2 XL driver

Windows 7 clients work flawlessly, but installing, printing to, or even opening the properties window for windows XP clients causes the client's print spooler to lock up. I am hesitant to blame the driver, as it works properly when installed locally, and the printer locally mapped via IP address. Unfortunately in this environment, getting rid of the older XP workstations is not my call, so this cannot be done. Is there anything that might work around or fix this issue?

Long delay when printing / Event ID 20 Server 2008 R2

$

Hello,

As of a week ago I have multiple users on both XP and windows 7 (latest updates for both) who are experiencing long delays - up to 20 minutes - when printing.  We have a single print server (VM running server 2008 R2 in a clustered hyper-v environment). The printer in question is a Canon ir1750IF.  No updates in drivers were made when things went from working to non-working.  The long delay seems to happen only when printing PDF's so originally I thought it was a driver issue or adobe issue. However, the delay happens consistently regardless of PDF program (adobe, adobe reader, or Foxit) and occurs even after changing print drivers (canon UFRII LT and PCL 5) Both matching 32bit and 64bit drivers are installed (windows 7 is 64, XP is 32bit)

Upon closer inspection, Event ID 20 is constantly being logged on the client machines and it looks like drivers are being installed at every print job.

As per other similar cases online I went to check the following:

To fix this issue, please perform as follows:

To change permissions (Disable queue manage permissions for users):

 1. From the print server, right-click the printer queue (object) in the Print & Fax window.
 2. Select Properties.
 3. Select the Security tab.
 4. Click the User Group used for printing permissions.
 5. Deselect the check in the box next to Manage Printers under the Allow column.

However, no one except administrator group allowed "mange printers"

The only other groups were "Everyone" which only allowed "print" and "Creator Owner" which only allowed "manage document"

Very similar to this: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/eu/winserverprint/thread/99f33517-81a1-408b-930a-d0edd8d625b4 but with no ID 22 issues.

Thanks!

print spooler service

My print spooler service is not running and it seams that I have tried everything.  I have a ASUS laptop.  64 bit running windows 7.  My printer is HP Officejet 6500A Plus.  My printer works fine with another computer so I know its not the printer.  What is wrong with my laptop?

on 64-bit 2k8 server, trying to add x86 drivers asks for ntprint.inf

$

I've read the relevant threads, and no one seems to be having my exact problem.

The server is a 64-bit 2008 server with the print role installed.  I can add x64 drivers fine, but when trying to add x86 drivers, I get stuck.  I have tried several HP printers:  LJ2300, 4100, 2420.

Here's the procedure:

Under the Drivers area of Print Management, right click, Add Driver.

Click Next.

Select only x86 architecture.

Choose Have Disk.

Browse to the location of the extracted x86 driver for the printer.

Select printer from list (in this case LJ2420)

Click Next.

Windows prompts with the following:

Install Components from Windows Media

Please provide path to Windows media (x86 processor).

Type the path where the file is located and click OK.

It appears to be looking for ntprint.inf.  I have tried several OS installation CDs - Server 2003, XP, Vista.  None of them are accepted.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

2008 R2 Terminal Server "Set as default printer"

$

Recently we've upgraded a clients 64-bit 2008 Terminal Server to 2008 R2. Before the upgrade users were able to select a default printer in the toolbar (it was a clickable button.) In 2008 R2 this button is no more (and users can't select another printer as default because right clicking is disabled.)

Is it possible to somehow restore this button? (Printers are distributed during logon on the Terminal Server, they are not 'redirected' in a RDP session.)

Our last option would of course be forcing this through logon script. However we aren't very fond of this due to users using a different printer at home which is forwarded when they logon through the clients portal.

Thanks for your time / help.
