Print server strange problem

$

On our head office domain we have a basic print server which provides printer management, and has a small share for one of the devices to dump scanned documents. It's a VM, Server 2012 R2, and does nothing else - it's been running without any issues for several years. The DCs (which are also DNS and DHCP servers) are Server 2016, as is the functional level.

A week or so ago I started to see strange issues when trying to add a printer in user profiles (all W10 clients). Go to control panel / devices and printers / add printer. The list may not include all the printers. If it's there, it may hang during adding it, or it may add it but then put it under the unspecified heading at the bottom, minus proper icon, and with nothing happenning if it's right-clicked. If the printer is added by clicking 'the printer I want isn't listed' and putting in \\servername\printername or \\serverIP\printername, the same things happen.

I tried the obvious - reboot DCs, clear DNS caches, etc, with no effect. The print server was on the list to upgrade to 2016 when I got round to it anyway, so I set up a new 2016 VM, configured it, downloaded the latest drivers for the printers and installed them - and it does exactly the same.

I'm rather stumped by this one. There haven't been any changes to the domain for months, and the last lot of Windows updates was nearly a month ago (before this started). Anyone any ideas?

Thanks

David

Devices and Printers Terminal Server 2016

Hello,

Has anyone see this kind of a issue. We have a network Print Server that all our printers run from. We are adding printers manually to a users session in a 2016 Cluster RDS environment. When you add the printer you can see the printer in word and other applications but when you look in devices and printers the printer is not listed and there could be 20+ other printers listed that are not listed in the apps you use. When you go to Device Manager though we see all the printers we do not want but not the one we have added manually. If anyone has any answers or directions I would like to hear your thoughts.  I do have a picture of the environment but I cant post it yet.

Thanks,

Print queue on Windows Server 2012 doesn't refresh to show jobs printed for several minutes

We print hundreds of documents from a Robot on a Win 2012 server to a Corporate Print Queue. When printing from the server the job spools and we can observe it in the queue from a Windows 10 user workstation but the print queue utility on the server doesn't show the jobs for several minutes (5-15).

Clicking refresh has no effect, you just have to wait until the queue decides to refresh.

There is no traffic blocked between the Win 2012 server and the Print server itself.
We observe no latency across the network, no retries and no dropped packets based on packet captures on both sides/servers.
There are no error messages in the event logs of either server.
There is no WAN optimization or other caching/compression type devices in play.
The jobs spool just fine and we can observe them locally on Win 10 user machines in the Print server queue immediately.
We are using the Canon Uni-flow driver and Canon reports no errors and point to some issue with Windows Print Queue Manager.

Printers Shared from windows 2012 R2 and Windows 2016 Server Shows Offline for Some users

HI,

I work in providing Managed Print Services to Various customers. Off late I have been facing the following Problem at Multiple User networks. All the Clients Involved are Windows 7 or Windows 10

1. Some Users on the network report that the Shared Printer on the Server they have connected to Shows Offline and they are unable to print

2. There are Others Users on the network who are able to print to the Same Print Queue

3. SNMP is disabled on the Standard TCP/IP Port on the Server

This can be resolved by

1. Removing the Printer connection from the client and adding it again

2. The User restarts his PC

Does any one have any Suggestions?

Hi all,

I seem to be getting the below error while importing printers from a file in windows server 2008R2SP1.

While restoring a print queue from backup, Printbrm.exe (the Printer Migration Wizard or the command-line tool) failed to copy print processor file C:\Users\RANDY~1.COB\AppData\Local\Temp\99B5DAD2-B483-4529-92C5-47C7594A837C\PRTPROCS\Windows x64\winprint.dll to C:\Windows\system32\spool\PRTPROCS\x64\winprint.dll. Error 0x5. Access is denied.
. This can occur if Printbrm.exe cannot locate all files for a print queue, or if the Print Spooler service cannot be stopped during installation of the print processor. If printing fails, manually install the print processor on the destination computer.

I have checked the printer export files against other servers and its working.
I can also add printers manually.

The error alludes to a securioty permissions error which i have check and confirmed that i have access to the both folders.
Im running the import as a Domain Admin.
I have also tried to add the printers in power shell. I get the following errors.

Please excuse the lenght of the but theres quite a few printers.

PS C:\Windows\system32\spool\tools> .\PrintBrm.exe -s localhost -r -f C:\finacleprinters862011.printerExport
Operation mode: restore
Target server: localhost
Target file path: C:\finacleprinters862011.printerExport.
Queue publish mode: none
Overwrite mode: keep existing settings
Queue ACL mode: restore ACLs from backup

Does Branch Office Direct printing apply to all eligible jobs?

$
0
0

Branch Office Direct printing sounds great but I have a question I couldn't find the answer to despite reading and searching a lot on the net.

If a printer in print management is enabled for Branch Office Direct (and the various pre-requisites that could cause fall back server side rendering are not triggered), does every single job sent from ANY client end up printing directly or only those deemed somehow to be 'in a Back Office'?  For BrachCache there is a latency parameter that determines if the content should be cached.  Is there some trigger that says clients should print directly or will even local to the print server clients end up going direct if Branch Office Direct is enabled?

Thanks,

Chris Ransdell

I upgraded my server to SP1 last night now none of the printers are showing up in devices and printers.  When I enter the command "cscript c:\windows\system32\Printing_Admin_Scripts\en-US\prnmngr.vbs -l" there is no reply just hangs.  How do I get all of the printers back?

Can not add printers that ARE there

Problem: go to control panel - printers and devices. Click Add a printer. Select the printer that I want isn't listed. Add a local or network printer as admin. Add printer using tcp/ip. Enter IP address of printer. Next "contacting printer", "detecting tcp/ip port". "Additional port info required".....wrong!

I have done this on this server many many times. normally it finds the printer and installs the correct driver. This printer is on the same subnet as the server and the server can ping it just fine. I have three other printers the same make and model already installed. This printer was working but on occasion, the server seems to lose track and the normal fix was remove/reinstall.

I went to the server print management in the management console found an error "removing printer" shown for this printer. I deleted said printer from print management and restarted the print spooler......did not help.

Am having this same problem on a printer of the same type on another subnet. Can ping it fine as well.

This all used to work just fine...now what?

Hi All,

I got 10 branch offices with Windows 10 Clients and each site got the network printer and currently shared from the HQ windows 2012r2 server.

How do i test BODP using the same server and keeping the same print share?

I assume need to install the  Print and Document Services and Setup BranchCashe ( Distributed Mode)

Also how do we check/Monitor its actually working?

Windows Server Print Services and 3rd-part Print Servers

I have a Windows Server 2019 server with the "Print and Document Services" role installed on it.  It acts as a print server for the company, and we have both HP LaserJet network printers and Ricoh printers being managed by it. Works great. I just found out we are moving to Canon printers this week and that Canon uses a 3rd-party print server named 'uniFLOW'.  Has anyone had any experience with 3rd-party print servers running on top of Windows Server and co-existing with Windows Print Services? I want to keep my HP printers configured as they are (and not use the Canon software to manage those).  Should i let these two different print servers live on the same physical server? I really dont want to spin up a second server just for uniFLOW but i will if it is going to be a problem with Microsoft's print server.  Thanks!!

Adding a cost centre before printing

Hello there,

We've a Windows Server 20k12 R2 running with all printers mapped in print server, every month I export a report about every print done by users.

I would like to know if its possible add an user input before printing to select cost center.

Any experience with this?

Thanks and regards.

Using Universal print driver, but shows completely different model and icon of printer

Server 2008 R2, print services role, clients: Win7

I came across a weird problem yesterday. I added a new printer on our print server, when I chose the driver I used the same HP Universal PCL5 driver that all the other shared printers have (I only use the Universal driver for all HP printers). Most of our printers only consist of HP 4000, 4100, 4250, and 4015 (18 printers in all on the server). Once that new printer driver was added, finished the add printer wizard, thenhalf of the printers in the print control panel now displayed "HP Color LaserJet CM2320 MFP Series" and the printer icon of those changed to this color printer. The other half of the printers are displaying the way they did before "HP Universal Printing PCL 5."  When I go to the properties of the printers themselves, under the driver tab, they still show they are using the Universal driver (which is good). So the only changes that got pushed out to the workstations is the icon change and the model. In the Print Server Properties > Drivers tab > I dont see any drivers that match the Color laserjet. A reboot of the server did not yield any changes.

Have you seen anything like this before? This sounds like something Microsoft would have a hotfix for.

Print Server Audits (How many prints done by individual per month)

$

I have been asked to devise a way to get information from my print server to tell how many print jobs per month a user is printing. I have already found posts regarding using a powershell script in order to pull event viewer info from Event ID's 307 and 805. However, they seem to be for the PowerShell advanced or Professional. I'm trying to not spend a whole lot of time on this, is there any way to get these audits just by using Event Viewer? Has anyone done this in the past?

Thank you,

Darin

Print job takes about a minute

Hey, since about 2 or 3 months ago we are having a sporadic problem with some printers.
We have a print server with approximately 150 print queues. It's a Win 2012 R2 Server with 8GB RAM and 13GB Free Disk space.

The print job is sent and in the Event Viewer I see the following two events:

Spooling Job XXX
Printing Job XXX

Then other jobs are shown and about a minute later, Job XXX is finished:

The print job XXX was sent through the print processor winprint on printer XXX, driver cab A4+ (300 dpi), in the isolation mode 0 (0 - loaded in the spooler, 1 - loaded in shared sandbox, 2 - loaded in isolated sandbox). Win32 error code returned by the print processor: 0x0.
Rendering job XXX.

Document XXX, Print Document owned by XXX on SERVER was printed on PRINTER  through port PORT. Size in bytes: 769. Pages printed: 1. No user action is required.

As you can see, the print job is very small. And it is not every print job that is delayed by this. According to our network guys, we do not have a problem in the net, after checking the logs.

The problem does not occur with every print job. Only about every 50th job has this problem. Bus since this problem occurs in our production, a minute is a long time for them to wait for a print to come out.

Any ideas what we can try? Currently we cannot put our finger on it, as it is different applications that have the problem while printing on different print queues. The only thing we currently see in common, is the  print server.

Printers with multiple ports for wired or wireless access

Hello,

I have brother printers that support both wireless and wired printing.  The printers have a separate IP address each for the wired or wireless connections.

Currently I populate the printers to the office computers by running the following command shell:

add-printerport -name "PrinterFaceDownstairsWired" -printerhostaddress "192.168.0.63"
add-printer -name "PrinterFaceDownstairsWired" -drivername "Brother Laser Type1 Class Driver" -port "PrinterFaceDownstairsWired"

I'd like to add a second printer port -name "PrinterFaceDownstairsWireless" -printerhostaddress "192.168.0.64" and when adding the printer make it choose eitehr the wired connection or the wireless connection, which ever is working.  Any thoughts on how to achieve this?

Note:  I am not using Active Directory or printer sharing, these are just network printers.  And I am looking for a script to do this so i don;t have to go to each computer to manually enter the settings.

thanks in advance!
